Challenges:

Most of my remote Logistics experience was VERY remote. If equipment wasn't carefully tracked, the entire project could be halted. More than once we were tasked with close watch over a unique item that could fit in a shoebox, valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is not the kind of item you could repurchase at the office supply store down the street.

Backup planning was not a luxury, it was a necessity.

How may I help you?

Letters of Recommendation:

Most projects in remote Alaska have enormous time pressure. There is a year's worth of work to accomplish in 90 to 100 days. Once the ice road is constructed, you must safely hit milestones before it melts again 100 days later.

With that in mind, it is especially nice to have received kind words about my efforts.

Ice Roads:

Ice road construction is a fascinating endeavor. Dozens of lakes are studied to determine environmental impact from "borrowing" a bunch of water and ice. These candidate lakes are identified along the proposed path. Thermistors are buried in the soil along the proposed route to carefully monitor temperature. Once the permit is secure, equipment will scrape up a layer of ice and dump it like asphalt. It will then get flattened and capped with water to harden. It is the smoothest road you could possibly imagine, and not nearly as slippery as you might assume.
